Valentine's Day Cards

Approximately 152 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged industry-wide (not including packaged kids’ valentines for classroom exchanges), making Valentine’s Day the second-largest holiday for giving greeting cards.
Hallmark creates more than 2,000 Valentine’s Day greeting card designs.
In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day in celebrated in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, and Italy.
Hallmark first offered Valentine’s Day cards in 1913 and began producing them in 1916.

2009 Product News 

  • Recordable Cards With Music enable the sender to record a 10-second message that plays before a pre-recorded song. Song titles include “Rock Star” by Hannah Montana, “My Guy” by Mary Wells, “Shine On” by Rascall Flatts, and “I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” by The Four Tops.
  • Cards with Sound play favorite songs by the original artists and audio clips from movies and TV shows with CD-like quality. The cards feature songs such as “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher, “This Is Me” by Jonas Brothers from Camp Rock, and “Hot Blooded” by Foreigner, as well as sound clips from Chris Rock, “The Simpsons” and hoops&yoyo.
  • Big Time Sound cards measure 11-by-11 inches and pack powerful sound quality. Songs include “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men and “ABC” by The Jackson 5. Two of the cards also are recordable.
  • The sweetness of the season gets a new interpretation with Candy Greeting Cards that contain 1 to 2 ounces of actual candy, such as Nerds, Red Hots and Lemon Heads, that make up part of the design.
  • Cards With Motion give the illusion of a two-second video or animation clip, a 3D image, or a combination of both when the cards are tipped from side to side. Some of the cards also feature sound or are available in an 11-by-11-inch size.
  • Cards With Light and Sound combine two innovative technologies into one card. For example, one card lights up with fireworks.
  • A memory maker for Valentine’s Day — three elegant 8 3/4-by-12 3/8-inch cards come with tissue, a gold seal and a slim red box for a unique way to present a special valentine.
  • Hallmark (PRODUCT) RED™ Valentine’s Day cards give consumers the opportunity to save lives of women and children in Africa. Some of the cards also include sound. A portion of the sales from Hallmark (PRODUCT) RED goes directly to the Global Fund to help women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Africa.
  • Mahogany offers more than 120 cards for African-American consumers, including six Cards With Sound.
  • Hallmark Sinceramente provides 220 cards for Hispanic consumers, including six Cards With Sound that feature Spanish songs by top Latin artists.
  • Hallmark has 16 of the hottest licensed characters for classroom valentine exchanges, including Disney Princesses, Hannah Montana, Disney Fairies, Disney’s Bolt, Iron Man™, Camp Rock, Cars, High School Musical, Spider-Man™, Barbie™, Mickey Mouse, and more. Some designs come with candy to attach to each card, and some feature 3-D designs.
