Hallmark Breast Cancer Awareness Products

Facts
One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States. (Source: Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, 2008)
Hallmark first aligned itself with Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 1999, when the company launched its Cards for the Cure® program.
Women diagnosed with breast cancer – and their family and friends – need emotional support from each other and the people around them to get through the triumphs and pitfalls of treatment.
Since its inception in 1999, Hallmark’s Cards for the Cure program has raised more than $2.7 million in donations for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
More than 3,000 Hallmark Gold Crown® stores have contributed to the fundraising effort.
Hallmark guarantees a minimum donation of $200,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 2008.

Hallmark Cards for the Cure®

Hallmark chose to support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs because it is an issue that affects its customers, as well as the owners and employees of the Hallmark Gold Crown® stores located across the country.

Each year, Hallmark Gold Crown stores that choose to participate in the Cards for the Cure program receive 200 specially designed greeting cards, as well as donation envelopes that can be sent directly to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Each store decides when to display the cards – some stores display them around the time of their local Race for the Cure® event, and others display them during October to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many stores also develop their own fundraising and marketing efforts on the local level to support the partnership between Hallmark and Komen.

Through Cards for the Cure, participating Hallmark Gold Crown stores give their customers a free, specially designed greeting card that reminds friends and family about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Other products available for purchase with a percentage of the retail sales price supporting Komen for the Cure also have been designated as part of the program through the years.

About the 2008 Cards for the Cure Design

Either the artist or writer of the card typically has a personal connection to breast cancer. The 2008 Cards for the Cure greeting card (the 10th annual card) features the work of Hallmark senior editorial director Linda Glessner Alley and Hallmark artist Jeanne Rittmueller. Both are breast cancer survivors. The word “hope” is featured prominently on the front of the card, and Alley wrote a message of hope for the inside as well. “For me there is no more important word than ‘hope,’” she says. Rittmueller added a design featuring 10 butterflies on the cover to celebrate both Hallmark’s 10-year partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the immeasurable strength breast cancer survivors share.
