National Boss Day

Always observed October 16

Facts
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 14 million individuals are employed in management occupations, and about 37 percent of them are women. (2005)
Workplace surveys confirm that one of the most important elements of job satisfaction is a positive relationship between a supervisor and employee.
Hallmark first made National Boss Day cards in 1979.

2008 Product Features

  • 90 National Boss Day cards.
  • Hallmark increased the size of its National Boss Day line by 90 percent in 2007 by creating collections of new and innovative cards, including Cards With Sound and new humor cards. The larger size of the line continues in 2008.
  • Cards range from professional to humorous, and many express appreciation.
  • In addition to six Cards With Sound featuring titles such as "The Beat Goes On" by Sonny & Cher and "Working in a Coal Mine" by Devo, Hallmark introduces two Big Time Sound cards for Boss's Day this year. The large-size cards have special speakers to provide high-quality sound. Songs include "All Star" by Smashmouth and "Hail to the Chief."

Holiday History

  • Began in 1958 when Patricia Bays Haroski, then an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Ill., registered the holiday with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
  • Ms. Haroski chose Oct. 16, her father’s birthday, as the date for National Boss Day because she felt he was an exemplary boss.
  • National Boss Day has become an international celebration in recent years and now is observed in countries such as England, Australia and South Africa.
