2010 Product Features
- Hallmark offers nearly 1,600 cards for Mother’s Day, including 99-cent value cards, Shoebox humor cards, Mahogany cards for African-American consumers, and Hallmark Sinceramente designs for Hispanic consumers.
- Hallmark introduces new Webcam Greetings for Mother’s Day. The cards invite the recipient to visit www.hallmark.com/extra to install an application on their computer. Once installed, the recipient holds the card up to their webcam. When the application recognizes the front of the card, pre-programmed 2D or 3D animation begins, and the card comes to life on the computer screen.
- Also new this year, Mother’s Day Card Kits enable kids to personalize a card or do an activity with Mom or Grandma.
- New Mother’s Day DVD Greetings include a card with coordinating DVD. The sender follows the included instructions using the template on the DVD to upload their personal photographs and create a customized slide show set to music. The recipient receives a beautifully designed card and professional-quality DVD slide show.
- New Video Greetings feature a video screen on the cover. The recipient pushes a button to watch a mini movie, lasting 30-60 seconds.
That’s Motherhood cards also debut in stores this season. The cards feature photography or artwork and sentiments submitted by consumers in a national contest.
- Hallmark Gold Crown® stores offer the widest variety of unique and innovative cards including:
o Cards With Sound that play favorite songs and audio clips from movies and TV shows.
o Big Time Sound cards that are 11-by-11-inch versions of Cards With Sound and pack powerful sound quality.
o Recordable Cards that enable the sender to record a 10-second message on the card. Some cards also include a pre-recorded song clip.
o Dual Speaker cards with two interacting sound chips.
o Paper Mechanics Cards With Sound that have a surprise pop-up feature on the inside.
o Between You & Me Cards With Sound that pair a long, sentimental message with a familiar instrumental song.
- Hallmark Gold Crown stores offer a variety of Mother’s Day gifts including photo frames, journals, flower pots, albums and Instant Scrapbooks, flower garden seed pots, home fragrance items, stuffed animals, books, CDs, and mugs. The new “I Love Grandma” Recordable Storybook enables a child to record his or her voice reading the story to Grandma. Made by Me Sticker Frames enable kids to decorate a photo frame, insert a photo and record a message for a one-of-a-kind gift.
Holiday History
Anna M. Jarvis, born in 1864 in Webster, Va., is credited as the force behind Mother's Day. When Jarvis was 41 years old, her mother died. On the second anniversary of her mother's death (the second Sunday in May 1908), Jarvis made public her plans to establish a day to honor mothers.
Other sources report "mother's day" church services on May 10, 1908, in Grafton, W. Va., and a celebration of mothers at the Wannamaker Auditorium in Philadelphia, Pa., on the same day.
The observance became official in 1914.
